Barred Rock

Barred Barred Rocks are dual purpose birds that are known for their hardiness, broodiness and being an easy going chicken.  They usually begin to lay around 18-20 weeks and will lay about 200-250 large brown eggs a year. They are really good layers in any weather.  Barred Rocks are an older breed and were most likely a part of your grandpa's flock.  Barred Rocks remain a popular favorite due to their attractive, low maintenance ways and the way they thrive in or out of the coop.  These birds love a hug and are a surprisingly docile pet that tolerates children well.  


The Barred Rocks are $30 each.

French Black Copper Marans

The French Black Copper Marans are a quiet, gentle breed that are not fond of cuddling.  Marans are calm, friendly and docile and so they get along well with other chickens and people. They are skilled foragers and love free ranging.  Marans eggs are visually appealing, even when they are not the super dark color.  They are winter hardy and lay about 200  dark reddish brown to chocolate colored eggs a year.  The French Black Copper Marans have feathered legs and feet while the Black Copper Marans have clean legs and feet.  Both have beautiful black feathers with an iridescent green sheen and copper color around their necks.  Black Copper Marans are really stunning birds.

New Hampshire Reds

New Hampshire Chickens.

The New Hampshire Reds are a dual purpose breed and lay about 200-220 brown eggs a year.  They are known for their friendly and docile personalities but may become competitive and aggressive at the feeder.  They are not normally aggressive toward people but you may need to know your birds before allowing them with children.  Chosen well, their calm gentle manners make them a good choice for a backyard flock.

The Rhode Island Red has a strikingly beautiful appearance, and is a prolific egg layer laying 250-300 brown eggs a year.  They are friendly, curious and intelligent. They are less flighty than some birds and are a good companion especially since they will interact in their own curious and intelligent ways.  Rhode Island Reds tend to be excellent foragers and therefore good free rangers.

Silver Laced Wyandotte Chickens.

The Silver Laced Wyandotte is known for its beautiful black and white feathers.  They are dual purpose birds but are more of a medium bird that lays 150-220  brown eggs a year.  They like to go broody and are great mothers.  These Wyandottes are especially docile but are entertaining.  They begin laying around 24-28 months.

White Leghorns

White Leghorn chickens.

White Leghorns are the beast at egg laying.   They can lay anywhere from 280 to 320 eggs white eggs a year.  White Leghorns are great foragers and lightweight so their feed bill is lower than most.  These birds are not particularly friendly as they are flighty and stand offish preferring to be left alone.  For a low maintenance cost and a lot of eggs these birds give you a lot of bang for the buck.  


White Leghorns are $30 each.
